1. Panacée fire kills 12 and prompts nationwide safety inspections

Twelve people died during a wedding at the Panacée event hall in Lingwala, Kinshasa, on the night of September 4–5. Smoke, panic and difficult evacuation appear to have increased the toll. The Interior Ministry ordered every province to inspect public event and leisure venues immediately and close those that fail safety standards.

2. Ebola reaches 6,436 cases as a revised six-month response begins

The outbreak has caused 3,095 deaths across 60 health zones in six provinces, an increase of 186 cases and 56 deaths from the figures in the September 4 edition. The government and international partners launched a $1.3 billion plan centered on surveillance, treatment, infection control and community action, while Ebola spread to Kayna — the sixth of Lubero’s seven health zones affected.

3. Weekend fighting spans Masisi, Walikale and Fizi

Wazalendo forces attacked AFC/M23 positions around Shango, Mahanga and Miko in Masisi; FARDC and AFC/M23 fought around Kisimba and Biriko in Walikale, displacing families from Ufamandu; and Twirwaneho, an AFC/M23 ally, took Nakihele in Fizi according to local civil society. Eight people were injured at Busurungi, while several battlefield outcomes remain unconfirmed.

4. Cholera kills 19 in the latest South Kivu and Kasongo counts

South Kivu registered 449 suspected cases and 13 deaths in one epidemiological week, with Kimbi-Lulenge, Bunyakiri, Shabunda, Mulungu and Ibanda most affected. Kasongo in Maniema recorded another 36 cases and six deaths in 24 hours, as health facilities reported shortages of protection and treatment kits.

5. Eighteen FARDC soldiers receive death sentences in Uvira

A military court convicted 18 Simba battalion soldiers of cowardice after hearings held from August 24 to 26. Uvira remains under government control and hosts South Kivu’s provincial institutions following the AFC/M23 capture of Bukavu. The case is separate from the Walikale convictions covered in the September 4 edition.
